The National Children’s Study research team in Durham County is a collaborative effort led by the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill. Barbara Entwisle, Director of the Carolina Population Center (CPC), and Nancy Dole, Deputy Director of the CPC, lead the Study team. Battelle Memorial Institute is handling most of the data collection with Study participants, while Duke University provides expertise with the medical community and assistance with recruitment.

UNC at Chapel Hill
Durham County is one of thirty-seven Vanguard locations in the United States participating in the National Children’s Study. The Durham County team is comprised of researchers, clinicians, and data collection experts from the UNC at Chapel Hill, Duke University, and Battelle Memorial Institute. Our team members have an interest in promoting and improving the health of families and their children.
The research team in Durham County is a collaborative effort led by UNC with Duke University and Battelle Memorial Institute. Anna Maria Siega-Riz Ph.D., R.D. (Associate Chair and Professor of Epidemiology at UNC), Emmanuel (Chip) Walter M.D., M.P.H. (Professor of Pediatrics at Duke), Sharon Loza, M.Ed., M.A .(Project Manager), and Camille Brown, B.A. (Assistant Project Manager) lead the Study team. Battelle Memorial Institute is managing most of the contact with Study participants, while Duke University is providing expertise in connecting with the Durham medical community. The team will be working together to engage the communities, perform the data collection, and analyze the data to understand how to improve the health of families and their children.

Battelle Memorial Institute
Battelle Memorial Institute is a partner with UNC and is taking the lead on the majority of the data collection activities in Durham County. Battelle’s Durham office, part of the Health and Life Sciences Global Business, involves staff dedicated to survey operations.

Duke University
Duke University is a partner with UNC for the Study, and Duke’s involvement in the Study is based in the Duke Clinical Research Institute, a multidisciplinary group of faculty and staff within the Duke University Medical Center. The Duke team, along with UNC, provides expertise for the medical aspects of the Study and oversight of the UNC medical outreach staff in Durham County.
