Durham County is a unique community marked by its racial and ethnic diversity and is comprised of over 260,000 residents. It’s also geographically diverse with areas in the County that are rural, urban, suburban, and commercial. Historically a tobacco and textiles town, Durham has evolved to become a bustling economic, academic, and healthcare center and has received many accolades for its growth and accomplishments. It is home to the prominent biomedical and research center, called the Research Triangle Park, and well-recognized universities, such as Duke University and North Carolina Central University. With hundreds of medical and health-focused organizations and companies, including Duke University Medical Center and the Durham Regional Hospital, Durham is known to many as the "City of Medicine."
The Durham County Vanguard location is housed at the North Carolina Study Center and was recently selected to participate in the 2010 Vanguard Study to test the Provider-Based Recruitment strategy as part of the National Children’s Study. Durham County is excited to join the other Vanguard locations to begin inviting eligible women and their families to join the Study. Including Durham County in the National Children’s Study will help to ensure that the Study represents all of America’s children.
