Welcome to the Cuyahoga County Study Location

Cuyahoga County Study location logoSitting on the banks of Lake Erie, Cuyahoga County is an ethnically and socioeconomically diverse county in Northeastern Ohio. Part of the Greater Cleveland metropolitan area, it is home to approximately 1.3 million residents according to 2009 Census Bureau estimates. Cuyahoga County has a manufacturing, health care, and service industry-based job market. We are home to a wealth of strong educational institutions, incredible museums, and major and minor league sports teams. Cuyahoga County boasts over 21,000 acres of parks as well.

Cuyahoga, meaning “crooked river” in the Iroquois language, is also the name of the river that bisects the county and which famously caught fire, helping to spur the environmental movement in the late 1960s. Though the county is mostly urban and suburban, it boasts a system of nature preserves which together make up the Cleveland Metroparks and which include hundreds of miles of walking, biking, and horse trails, as well as parks, nature centers, picnic areas, fishing holes, and golf courses.

Cuyahoga County was chosen as one of the first 37 National Children’s Study locations because of its location, the people who live here, and the number of children born here each year. The inclusion of Cuyahoga County in the Study will help ensure that it represents all of America’s children. The research team at the Case Western Reserve University Study Center is excited to implement the Study in Cuyahoga County.
