 Welcome to the Montgomery County Study Location


Montgomery County, Maryland is bordered on the east by the Patuxent River and on the west by the Potomac River. The County is comprised of mostly suburban communities north and west of Washington, DC. Farther west are more traditional rural areas. While overall quite affluent, the population is very diverse economically and culturally. In the last 20 years, the population of Montgomery County has changed dramatically, with increases in both size and cultural diversity.

In 2006:

  • The total population of the County was 932,131
  • 16.8% were African American, 13.8% were Hispanic, and 13.4% were Asian
  • There were 13,807 births in the County

Timeline

Fall 2007: Establish the John Hopkins University Study Center

Summer 2010: Establish the Montgomery County Study location Field Office

Fall 2010: Initiate Montgomery County awareness campaign for the Study

Fall 2010: Contact select households to invite them to join the Study

Winter 2011: Begin to enroll families
