About Polk County (Iowa)

Polk County is situated in the middle of the state of Iowa. It is the most populated county in the state. Polk County is a metropolitan community with expanding residential, commercial, and industrial areas amidst remaining rural/agricultural areas, wetlands, and woodlands. The county’s major employers are in the areas of services, insurance, and retail. The state capital, Des Moines, is located within the county.

Timeline

September 2007: National Institutes of Health selects Polk County and the University of Iowa for National Children’s Study.

February 2010: Polk County Iowa Study location is selected as one of the pilot locations for the Enhanced Household Recruitment strategy.

March 2010: Community engagement activities begin in Polk County.

August 2010: Study enrollment areas selected in Polk County.

October 2010: Polk County Iowa Study location kick-off event held.

November 2010: Field staff training held.

December 2010: The enumeration process in Study segments begins.
