Schuylkill County is one of 105 locations in the United States selected to participate in the National Children’s Study. Schuylkill County is located in east central Pennsylvania in the heart of the anthracite coal region. Pottsville is the county seat.
The National Children’s Study is the largest Study of environmental influences on children’s health and development ever conducted in the United States. The Study is investigating the most important children’s health issues of our time, including birth defects, asthma, obesity, and autism.
The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) is coordinating the Study in Schuylkill County in partnership with Schuylkill Medical Center South Jackson Street. The Study team works closely with Schuylkill County community leaders and organizations to make the Study successful. In addition to a central office at CHOP itself, the Study team has a site office located at 171 Red Horse Road (off of Route 901, the Gordon Nagle Trail), Suite 3, Pottsville, PA.
Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant will be recruited for the Study at local obstetrical practices, but also are encouraged to contact us to find out if they are able to participate. Joining the Study involves providing information through periodic interviews before and during a woman’s pregnancy and as her child grows. This is an observational Study, therefore participants are not asked to take medicine or receive treatment. Participants are given a monetary thank you for their involvement with the Study.
Schuylkill County is excited about its selection as a Study location and proud to contribute to the health and well-being of children by participating in the Study. If you or someone you know is pregnant or planning to become pregnant and lives in Schuylkill County, please contact us for more information. Thank you for supporting this important study of children’s health.
